Jiwai.de: The Chinese Twitter with Multimedia Supports
Yesterday, Zhuohuan Li, the founder of Jiwai.de published a post in his blog, which I would like to share with our readers.
Jiwai.de is a Twitter copycat in China, which launched in May 2007 and now one of the top three Twitter-like service in China, after Tencent’s Taotao.com and Fanfou.com. Zhuohuan Li quoted a news about Seesmic’s $6M funding in Feb 2008, and said that Jiwai.de has video conversation supports in last December.
Well, I don’t think what Jiwai.de can support now is the same as what Seesmic can do, since Jiwai.de does not host your videos, you just share a video links in Jiwai which allows you to view the video without leaving Jiwai. Actually, it is a mashup service by using API of Youtube, Youku and Tudou. However, I think Jiwai’s multimedia support feature does reflect the spirits of an open web platform. Besides video support, Jiwai also supports the music sharing mashup from 8box and Yobo, and image sharing from Yupoo and Flickr.
We believe that Chinese web will eventually become more open, especially when some big Internet companies in China, including Taobao and Tencent, are starting to consider an open strategy. In the mean time, more mashup services will emerge from this open web, which is good to foster China’s Internet innovation.

So when do we start to see friendfeed type aggregators in china? if everyone is QQing, Jiwai-ing, suggesting things on Tudou, living in Xiaonei or inside an MMORPG.. seems its needed

To John G of 2nd floor, http://www.zuosa.com has rolled out friendfeed-like feature already. One can follow friends’ updates at blogs, albums, books (douban), delicious etc.
Would be great if the Chinese versions of Twitter could roll out some usage observations or stats.
[...] Chinese Internet entrepreneurs do not like the idea of widget? Maybe not. There are some Internet startups in China who like it and developed widgets already. For example, the first widget I can remember is from Douban, which was released shortly after it founder Bo Yang launched the website in early 2005, when widget is not a hot buzz yet. You can find Chinese blogs with Douban’s widget on their sidebar from time to time. Moreover, Yobo.com has widgets for Friendster, as mentioned by Kaiser. The Twitter-like services, such as Jiwai.de and Zuosa.com, have widgets as well, so do photo sharing websites and others. However, in general, most of the startups haven’t pay attention on widget.
