Product Pulse: Baidu Startpages, Sina Space And Community Search
Baidu has launched personal startpages. Unlike iGoogle, Baidu doesn’t let you add your own news feeds, not to say programmable gadgets.
Currently all you can customize are a couple of handy assistants, news aggregation and search keyword trends. Since Baidu’s news aggregation is the best out there, the product still makes perfect sense even with the limitation. Baidu News cannot add unlimited classifications. Hopefully this startpages will serve different requirements of the users.
At the same time, Sina rolled out it’s own space product, Sina Space. If you have Sina passport, your space has already been activated. Sina has one of the most popular blog services in China. The space product is an aggregation of user’s blog, photos and videos. It also adds some social features to interact with friends.
Sina space can partly act as a personal startpage. Users can subscribe to other member’s blog and videos, but they cannot add external RSS feeds.
For users to easily find content in all kinds of Sina products, it has rolled out community search. It’s actually Sina’s insite search, but the result pages are well organized, similar to Chinese Yahoo’s integrated search result.
More earlier, Sina has given up developing its own search engine product by cooperating with Google China. It seems it has focused resources on building a good insite search product. This is a good move, since it has already become one of the biggest sites producing content.

[…] We noticed that on a conference in last week, Charles Cao, CEO of Sina, mentioned that Sina will launched four services in near future, including Sina Space, which has launched in March, Sina Mofun, Sina TV and an open platform. So it seems 2008 will be a year of open platform in China’s Internet, Taobao, Tencent and Sina all said they are considering an open strategy. Then who will be the first one to make it real? […]
