51.com To Launch Open Platform in June
I’ve heard about it from some friends before, but in this morning, Yonghe Yao, Senior VP of 51.com confirmed in CHINICT that 51.com will launch a open platform, probably in June.
We’ve reported before that some emerging sns in China are working on open platform, but 51.com seems the first large sns to implement it soon. It is a good news for a more open web in China. Actually, we seldom see big websites in China would like to share their user base with other. Considering their over 25 million monthly active users, if it is really an open platform, that’s great news for those third-party developers. And when answering question of Eric Eldon, editor of VentureBeat, Mr. Yao said 51.com is “evaluating open standards from US companies and hope to incorporate as many standards as possible”.
51.com is the direct competitor of QQ in China, and it is possibly more popular than QQ in some 2nd and 3rd tier cities, but still facing cut-throat challenge from QQ. Maybe the new open platform can help them to retain users.
As I said before, this year would witness a big year for a more open web in China. Some big names are talking about open their platform, including Taobao and QQ. 51.com has a good start towards this trends to be the first big one to announce its schedule. Though I don’t like what 51.com did to promote their service before, I should applaud for their open plan.
51.com is closing another round of $50 million funding. Its revenue for last year is 44 million RMB, and 70% from virtual good and membership fee, 30% from online ads.

[...] Possibly because of 51.com’s announcement of open developer platform plan in last week, Xiaonei.com, the so-called China’s Facebook, can not wait to announced its open developer platform before it is fully ready. [...] In addition to MySpace.cn, CityIn and Tianya.cn, seven other Chinese social networking sites will jointly promote OpenSocial platform on their sites, including Xiaonei, 51.com, Douban, Hainei, Tianji, Yiqi.com and a web-base online casual game website 51wan.com. So both Xiaonei and 51.com, two SNS with large user base, will support OpenSocial standard. All these websites are leading or at least 2nd tier SNS in China, if all of them really embrace OpenSocial platform, it would be a great news for those widget developers. [...]
