Rumor: Google China Partners with Kingsoft on Office Products

WPS OfficeWPS, developed by Kingsoft, is a very important name in the history of China’s consumer software industry, it was the only main competitor of Microsoft’s Office products in China. But its market share keeps shrinking in recent years.

We has been expecting Kingsoft can exploit its technology in office software development to build an online office service, and continue to compete with MS Office. However, obviously online office is not what Kingsoft want, it has made up its mind to develop itself into an online gaming company. It was rumored that Kingsoft will spin off its non-profitable business from the listed company in Hongkong, including WPS and Kingsoft Dictionary.

Kingsoft said in May that it is cooperating with an international Internet company on WPS. Today, Sina reported that it is Google China who will partner with Kingsoft to release an office product. The product is believed to be a WPS-based desktop office software, but closely integrated with Google Docs, the online office service by Google. The strategy makes sense, because pure online office service, as Google Docs, is quite difficult to attract users in China, people still like using a desktop software. On the other hand, to partner with WPS can also help Google Docs to leverage WPS’s current user base, though it is quite small. But both Google China and Kingsoft denied that they are cooperating on WPS product. Is it really a rumor?

In May, Google China launched a dictionary software called Google Kingsoft Ciba, which is based on Kingsoft’s popular Ciba dictionary software and adding some online features.
