Interview With Edwyn Chan of Blogku Media, Part II

The second part of interview with Edwyn Chan of Blogku Media, the first part is here.

CWR: How do you think the blog network market in China?
Edwyn: I think there is a lot of opportunity for blog media. Currently everyone is just going to the portals for content, soon users will find portals aren’t a once size fits all product and will be looking for niche content to satisfy their needs.

CWR: Who do you consider as your existing or potential competitors?
Edwyn: Existing competitors is Weblogs Inc. Potential ones include Creative Weblogging Network. I know the CEO, his network has english, german and french blogs. He told me he is interested in the chinese market.
(Note: Weblogs Inc. has some Chinese blogs, such as popular Autoblog and Engadget, and Creative Weblogging just add a Chinese blog YuLeguan into its network in this week.)

CWR: How do you think about overseas blog networks’ China strategy, such as Autoblog and Engadget?
Edwyn: Don’t really know their strategy as the Chinese version of autoblog and engadget came pre-AOL acquisition. However, I do hope that China will have its own blog media culture.

CWR: Have you built any partnership for developing your network?
Edwyn: We have content exchange with Bokee and Netease(163.com).

CWR: Postshow is special in your network, it is an affiliated blog, so what benefit you can bring to those blogs to attract others to join you?
Edwyn: I think blog media is still in its infancy stage and blogs in this space need to cooperate and join forces to show the Chinese internet world that blogs are also a medium and not just an online diary. Apart from that Blogku hopes to help individual blogs find adveritising by amalgamating all the inventory to negociate with advertisers as a whole to increase bargaining power.

CWR: As I notice before, I can not find advertising in your network. So what’s the main revenue source for Blogku Media now?
Edwyn: Yes, so far, there is no advertising on our blogs yet. And I just think it is still not the time for it, we need to enlarge our network first.

CWR: Hexun and some other startups are considering to build their blog advertising network, will you benefit from it?
Edwyn: It’s great that they are doing this as this helps educate advertisers that blogs are also a medium for advertising. Chinese advertisers really haven’t crossed this chasm yet.

CWR: What’s your future plan for Blogku Media?
Edwyn: Finding more affiliates for the network and creating synergy between Blogku and Newhots
(Note: Newhots is another project of Edwyn)

CWR: What’s your favorite Chinese web2.0 service?
Edwyn: Like everyone else I think Douban is great.

CWR: What do you think is the most important feature of web2.0?
Edwyn: Easy of use, interaction with other users and content contribution
