CWR Roundup: Netease, Alibaba Software, Tudou Funding and Google
Netease quits wireless business: Netease, a leading online gaming service provider and web portal, is making its strategy transition recently, Shanghai Securities News reported. Netease will retreat from wireless business and streamline some of its content channels. The wireless business, which used to be a major revenue source of Netease and now only accounts for less than 5% of Netease’s revenue, will been cancelled, due to tighter regulation by wireless operators. Netease will put more resource into search engine business. Youdao.com, search engine by Netease, has been underdevelopment for about a year.
Alibaba to enter software market: It is reported that Alibaba will register an Alibaba software company in next month, and Alibaba has acquired a software firm in Chengdu for RMB 100million. Alibaba’s software business will mainly focus on ecommerce and enterprise management software. It is possible that some of its business will take free policy for marketing and promotion.
Rumor: Tudou will get its third round investment: There is market rumor that Tudou.com, a podcasting and video sharing site, will secure its third round funding of 20 million from investors including JAFCO. Tudou got $800,000 from IDG in its Series A funding and $8.5 million from GGV, JAFCO and IDG in May 2006.
You are not person of the year in China: “You” are Person of the Year of Time Magazine, but some Chinese blogger (1, 2, 3) think, in China, you are not the person of the year. Yes, there are many web 2.0 websites in China, people and VC are crazy for user generate content. But many sites are facing challenge of lack of original content, esp. those video sharing site, “you” are not accustomed to generate content, the internet are still dominated by web portal sites, and even regulation policies of related government authorities.
Google China no joint-venture plan: Lee Kaifu, Google’s vice president of China operations, said yesterday that Google has no plan to made joint venture with any Chinese partners, and he has confidence in Google’s current approach in China. Does this clarify previous rumor that Google plans to a acquire video sharing site or find a local partner to operate Youtube Chinese version? Danwei reported that Google’s English-Chinese machine translation hurt the feelings of the Chinese people.
