EditGrid: An Online Spreadsheet

EditGridEditGrid is an online spreadsheet service developed by a software house Team and Concept, based in Hongkong, China. As all of its competitors, such as iRow, Zohosheet and Numsum, EditGrid allows users to create and save spreadsheet files online and share with other users for collaboration.

Why TnC would like to develop another web-based spreadsheet application? They said in their blog:

TnC makes event software. Some of our clients had used spreadsheets and spreadsheets only before using our software. So, in our three years of existence, we have tried very hard to make our software as “spreadsheet” as possible. We used XUL, and we may probably have made one of the most sophisticated XUL web application deployed to real usage. It is now being deployed for managing roughly HK$60 million annual budget for one of the biggest event organisers in Hong Kong. EditGrid is our new approach to solve the problems we have been facing. It is an online spreadsheet service for intensive collaboration on a large amount of data.

Well, I’m not a big fan for online office so far. However, I found EditGrid is quite easy to use, the interface is clean and user-friendly. Some of its notable features are:

However, EditGrid still lacks some must-have functions, especial graphing and multi-sheet in one file. Facing the keen competition in this market, EditGrid still have to improve their functionalities to meet the demand of their clients, I think.

EditGrid still is buggy when dealing with Chinese now. My another expectation for EditGrid is to fully support Chinese and launch a Chinese version. If so, it will be the first web-base Chinese spreadsheet application.

Note: You can test EditGrid here and find the screenshots here.

This is David from EditGrid. Thanks so much for your comments. We’ve just upgraded it to public beta 3 with another usability enhancement: sheet properties. Kindly take a look when you have time.

Re: Chinese version. Localisation is in our plan. We will work on it once we’ve completed the major features.

Re: Buggy Chinese input. As a Hongkong based company, we have noticed this and filed a bug for this quite long time ago. Solving this issue is very tricky, we are still finding a good way.

[...] More and more Web 2.0 sites are popping up from Hong Kong, slowly but surely. First is the Online spreadsheet EditGrid. It’s been told many times only, here and here. You can say it’s in direct competition with Google’s own spreadsheet or the other way around, whichever you prefer. I can’t go into details about how they compare as I haven’t found the need to use those online office applications. I will give them a test run sooner or later though. [...]

Time flies. It has been 2 months since you first blog about EditGrid. We’ve made 3 more release in this period. Now it is public release 6.

This release is subtantial, because we’ve moved one step closer to our vision of online spreadsheet. Special feature in this release:

    1) RemoteData, now user can get a live data feed into their spreadsheet for calculation. The first usage is to get live stock quote and currency exchange data.

    2) EditGrid Labs, we’ve also released an API for other applications to build upon EditGrid. See: http://labs.editgrid.com

Also in these few releases, we’ve improved other basic functionalities, including, post-to-blog, multiple sheets, drag-to-fill, advanced formating, etc.

The infrastructure to localisation of EditGrid to simplified Chinese will be ready in beta 7. We’ll call for our users’ help in doing the translation to Chinese and other langauges.

[...] Well, all of them are not easy to answer, esp. for the questions on promising web 2.0 companies, I only mentioned companies I’m familiar with. And it seems that I forgot some companies with great potential, for example, Hongkong-based Editgrid, which just release a dynamic image feature. So maybe we should make a list of editor’s choice for China’s web 2.0 companies. [...]
