Qihoo: BBS Search Engine

QihooSam Flemming runs a company called CIC Data to monitor the internet in China, and do Internet word of mouth and competitive intelligence research for his clients. He believed there are more interesting conversations and larger volume of conversations on BBS, than blogs in China. So I think Qihoo, a BBS search engine, can help him a lot to monitor the conversation.

Qihoo, recently got funding from Sequoia Capital, is focused on China’s BBS search and aggregation. Since many of its team members comes from Yahoo China search team, Qihoo has strong technology base for the search service. Because most of the BBS don’t have a static permenant URI for posts, it is more difficult for search engine’s crawlers to index the content. Qihoo introduced a Spider Plan for it to cooperate with a large amount of BBS to index their posts.

According to the characteristics of BBS posts, Qihoo also apply different algorithm to determine the relevancy and rank the search results. Links are used much less in BBS, so page ranks by link is not feasible for BBS search. Qihoo takes account of number of views of the post, number of reply to the post and other factors to determine the BBS post ranks.

Besides Qihoo, there are also some other BBS search engines in China, as Teein and Daqi (former ChinaBBS), so far, it seems Qihoo provider best results. So if you want to monitor what happened in China’s BBS, I think you can give Qihoo a try.
