Chinese Web 2.0 Site Directory

There are web2.0 websites emerging almost every day in China, so I’d like to introduce two Chinese web 2.0 site directories to help you know them.

MywowoMywowo looks like another digg, but it focus on web2.0 sites in China. Users can review, comment, tag and digg the web 2.0 sites, and also submit new sites. Currently, it collects more than 513 web 2.0 sites, most of them are from China.

Besides registered users’ comments, Mywowo also invited several bloggers to be official consulting team member of Mywowo to comment those sites.

Web2list.cnWeb2list.cn is another Chinese web2.0 site directory, which has 442 site information now. You can use tag cloud to find related websites, its tag system is more useful than Mywowo. It is also open for users’ comment. A notable feature of Web2list.cn is that it provides news related to the web 2.0 sites.

So if you know Chinese, these two sites may help you to find more China’s web 2.0 websites, but if you don’t know Chinese, maybe you still have to keep on reading this blog. :)

Reading this blog does seem easier than learning Chinese. Thanks.

Here’s a new website launched last week in Taiwan: http://knews.tw

On the surface looks like Digg, but is a fair bit more technical in terms of ranking stories (details in the FAQ). Anyhow, one nice feature is it’s totally bilingual, so you can switch between Chinese and English. It’s a new site so not a lot of content as yet, but many of the stories posted are in English.

Likewise, the struggling former Taiwan media giant, PCHome, also launched a number of sites last week: portal20.pchome.com.tw. They seemed to have missed the meaning of “web 2.0″ entirely, having minimal AJAX, no RSS, no Firefox/Opera support (IE only), forcing all users to be their email member, and basically providing poor copies of foreign sites. Taiwan media and particularly tech savvy bloggers have given the sites a major thumbs down. To the skeptics, it appears that RSS was not included in these sites because it provided users a means to view site content without seeing ads, and AJAX was dropped because it reduced pageviews (and consequently ad impressions). I believe there may be some truth to that theory myself. PCHome sends out multiple spam emails to over 5 million Taiwan residents - every day. Any attempts to opt out results in server not found messages. Bloggers are now forming a consumer action group to try to put an end to the endless spam messages.

  6. Portal 2.0: PCHome’s Web2.0 Initiative — China Web2.0 Review on June 17th, 2006 12:22 am

[...] It is obvious that PCHome want to use Portal 2.0 to find new development path in web 2.0 world. Is it “2.0″ enough? It seems many bloggers in Taiwan don’t agree. All these Portal 2.0 service does not provide RSS feed, some service don’t support Firefox. Someone thought that “it appears that RSS was not included in these sites because it provided users a means to view site content without seeing ads, and AJAX was dropped because it reduced pageviews (and consequently ad impressions).” [...]
