Web2.0 panel on Stanford ATI Entrepreneurial Conference 2006
–by Chen Luyi
On Wednesday, Aug.16 we held Stanford ATI Entrepreneurial Conference in Zhangjiang High-tech park, Shanghai. This conference is organized by a group of tudents from Asia Technology Initiative, a student organization from Stanford. We started from a brief concept on a piece of white paper about 40 days ago. Then we finished the rest of things including inviting speakers, conference venue decoration within about one month. Topics of the conference include: Alternative Energy and Clean Technology, Web2.0 and Intellectual Property. Here is the event summary of Web2.0 panel.
The objective of Web2.0 panel is to provide an exposure opportunity for local startups. We tried to answer these questions: What business opportunities does rapid changing web technology bring to us? What can we learn from successful business models? In this panel, we selected six panelists with different backgrounds. They are City8,8Box, Podlook, Plus8star, Kongzhong, and Ucloo. Ucloo is a last change to replace Hoodong, which does personal profile search. For a brief introduction of other panelists please refer to my introduction of Web2.0 panel before the conference.
The panel is scheduled in 90 min. But due to some delay in lunch time, actual duration of this panel is only 75 min. The rundown of the panel started from self introduction of each panelist, then followed by topic discussion organized by the moderator. In this part, each panelist chose to answer one question from the moderator. The panel ended with a Q&A section. Limited by time and the general topic nature, it’s impossible to discuss any topics in details. At least, it’s an opportunity for attendees to see real person behind these companies.
Most of the panelists we invited are from early stage startups. They mostly treat the speech as a promotion opportunity. We have got some feedback from the ones who don’t like advertising style speech. No wonder most guests think Nick Yang’s talk insightful, because he doesn’t have to spend extra effort to explain the business of his company. City8 made the most serious preparation. Although the conference room has no Internet connection, they brought their own laptop with offline demo installed. As the organizer, I appreciate their attitude. Ucloo is questionable service, if you have ever noticed their privacy debate. But they gave the most successful self advertisement in the panel. Their offline demo makes everyone knows their business immediately. Regardless the source of the data, who is in doubt with the usefulness of this service?
The reason I invited Benjamin Joffe to this panel is mostly because of his work in Mobile Monday Beijing. This is a very good chance for me to discuss community session organization with Benjamin. Is it interesting to talk about how to invite speaker with a speaker you invited? All the topics in Mobile Monday Beijing is selected by Benjamin himself, since he does mobile business consulting himself. Lesson to all Web 2.0 companies: Generate a professional community around your core business, which worth more than your code and servers.
The last thing I want to share is how we find these companies as panelists. These companies are more or less easily reachable for us. If you have the question why you are not contacted by us, think of these points: Do you have a blog? Do you list your contact information on your website? I don’t want to send email to address like info@xxx.com. Of course your business should be interesting and understandable too.
