Barcamp Shanghai - Sept. 24
So what is Barcamp? Since this is the first barcamp in China, I think I need to spend some words grok it. The original barcamp is a response to the invite only Foocamp. It’s an event for grassroot tech-community to discuss ideas and find the new trends in an open environment. Now Barcamp is spreading over the world like wild fire. For an idea what the event would be like you had better google it yourself.
The original idea to raise the first Chinese version of barcamp is from Scales and Crystal of Raincity and kk+ of Bryght. They are the intializers. It’s not suitable to call them organizer, since in the spirit of barcamp everyone can be the organizer. There’re already a group of local people joined in the organizers group.
I have the intention to write a post on CWR about this event for at least a week, but I just keep it in draft status without publishing it. Why? Because I am waiting for more stuffs to be confirmed before announcing the event. This is a typical mind of conference organizer, but this is an unconference, is it? Now I realise that it cannot just depend on a few active organizers, but should borrow the wisdom from the community.
Seriously this is a somewhat call for sponsor post. It’s the sponsors that make this event happen and free to attendees. The sponsor packeges would be much cheaper compared to traditional conference. Several hundred RMB could make you a sponsor, as cheap as paying a dinner for your friends, but makes a fun event happen for a hundred people.
If you wanna talk about this, go to this Google Group or add my skype (lychen1109), I will invite you to the Barcamp Shanghai organizers chatting group. I would say it again, everyone who has something to contribute to the event can be the organizer. Nothing is secret here. No commercial goal, no sells pitch in this event. The only commercial thing we would do is as followings for sponsors:
- List your logo on the event website (
The link will work in one or two daysThe link now works and updated) - Thank you at the begining and the end of the event
- Print your logo on the free T-shirt to all attendees, if there’s a T-shirt sponsor
Among all the sponsors, the venue sponsor is currently the most urgent. I have been looking for some places for renting, but they are not flexible enough for this event. It’s a common way to use company facilities to host the event outside of China. Location of Barcamp Vancouver is donated by WorkSpace, BarcampRDU located at RedHat HQ, just name a few.
The requirement of the venue is (copied from Crystal’s email):
- availabie for 8 hours (minimum, 24 hours would be nice)
- internet access (we can supply the wireless routers, etc)
- Room for 50 people (would be nice to have room for 150, and a space that could be broken up into 2-3 smaller meeting rooms)
- Needs to be available for September 24, 2006
I have asked some companies that probably have ideal place to offer, but it won’t hurt to get more potential venue for selection. So if you wanna discuss, go to this group.
