China Web 2.0 New Roundup

QQ video in its labs: Tencent, with its most successful IM product QQ, intends to be one of the innovative internet companies in China. Tencent launched its Labs last month together with Tecent Innovation Contest 2006 to find innovative project in online communities, QQ-related products and others.

QQ LabsOn Oct 19th, QQ Labs inaugurate its first project - QQ Video (IE only). QQ Video is in limited public test now. It is no doubt that QQ Video is also a Youtube wannabe in China and will copy many Youtube’s features. However, it will has its own features as well, for example, it integrates P2P technology for less bandwidth and better user experience, to share video with your QQ contacts will also be quite easy and convenient, it also use Ajax heavily. QQ Video is not the first China’s Youtube wannabe, and it will not be last either. However, considering QQ’s enormous user base, it should not be underestimated.

Blogbus ChannelBlogbus launched blog aggregation service: Blogbus, one of the main blog hosting service provider in China, launched a new service named “Channel” to aggregate well-written posts by Blogbus users. Different from blog service provider in US, key service provider in China are used to build a portal-like front page , for instance, Blogcn, Bokee and Sina Blog, with the aim to gain more traffic. Blogbus is the last one to follow this tradition, but it still keep its clean and simple style in this new Channel.

China Unicom to introduce its own IM: According to report, after China Mobile, China Unicom, the second largest wireless carrier in China, is testing its own IM product called Chaoxin (超信, don’t know its English name yet). If China Mobile and China Unicom both start to use its own mobile IM product, will they dominate wireless IM market in China?

Alibaba finished its acquisition on Koubei: Alibaba, the parent company of Yahoo China, announced to finished its acquisition on Koubei, a Hangzhou-based classifieds ads site. In fact, Yahoo China has added the link to Koubei at least several weeks before. Koubei was founded by an ex-product manager of Alibaba in 2004.

    tudou.com, 6rooms, wangyou and yoqoo are all actively trying to raise money right now, most likely to capitalize on the youtube bubble. tencent and sina (which has also quietly launched a video upload service) will do to these startup video sites what sina did did bokee and blogcn. none of these video sites has built a masive community, the technology behind these sites is trivial, so there is no need for one of the big portals to buy one of the little statups to get in the game.

    Any VC that puts more money into a tudou or a wangyou must not have his/her own money in the fund

    There’s not too many blogs covering China Web 2.0 space in English… Yours is by far the best I can find. Keep up the good work!

    BTW, good to see QQLabs/QQVideo got covered here. One minor correction — the P2P feature in QQVideo is still in R&D, should come soon though.
