Over 2 Million Bloggers in Hong Kong
According to research released today by Microsoft’s MSN and Windows Live Online Services Business, there are over 2 million bloggers in Hong Kong.(via Florence) MSN conducted an online survey on its MSN portal across seven markets in Asia, including Hong kong and Taiwan. There were 1191 netizens in Hong kong participating the survey. Here are some of main findings regarding blogging in Hong kong:
- 56% of over 4 million netizens in Hong kong are writing blogs, that is over 2 million;
- 62% of all bloggers are female;(this finding is quite interesting, I think)
- Most of the bloggers(70%) indicated that they started blogging for sharing diary or photos with friends or family, more than half of them use blogs to keep connection with friends and family, higher than the average percentage in all seven market(43%).
- Almost half of respondents(47%) believe that blog content is as trustworthy as traditional media.
- About 80% bloggers take no more than 5 hours per week in reading or updating blogs
- Most favored blog content are tourism(23%), music(18%) and IT(6%).
- Most blogs have a small audience, 82% of blogs have less than 20 visitors a week
Since only the visitors of MSN will participate the survey, it is very possible that the research are based on a biased sample. However, I think many of the findings are still useful. And I agree with one of its main conclusion that blogging is a social phenomenon with Asians primarily blogging as a means to maintain and build their social connections and to express themselves.

that’s impossible.
I would bet there are less than 200 bloggers.
(Blogger = someone who makes at least 3 blog posts per week)

Hi Tangos,
I agree with maneck, this figure cannot possibly be in the right ballpark. With a population around 6-7 million, over 2 million bloggers would be an outrageously high penetration. Running a smallish internet-agency in HK, such deep relevance of blogging never occured to me in HK. IMO, the main usage of the Internet here is still broadband-tv…
Cheers,

I can’t say how accurate 2M sounds, but there are a lot of bloggers in HK. However, the majority of the content on the blogs here are for the friends and family only (going back to the 3rd point) unless you are interested in the lives of a middle/high school girls :).
You’ll find tons of local language on Yahoo HK blogs and Xanga, I guess MSN too, and maybe MySpace and Blogger (but can’t say how often they are updated).
Another point of interest is that I’ve noticed the local gossip magazines here are publishing photos from blogs and I can only assume they go through blogs to seek out any and every little bit of content they can find on the HK stars/wealthy individuals and their friends. It’s ridiculous.
