Some Blog Statistics

Here is some of the recent statistics and forecasts on China’s blogosphere.

1. CNNIC released its latest Statistical Reports on the Internet Development in China(English version not yet available), China’s internet users amounted to 111 million with more than 64 million broadband users. According to the report, 14.2% respondents said blog is one of their frequent used services, can it be translated to about 15.8 million (111 million times 14.2%) bloggers in China?

2. According to a report by Internet Society of China, Bokee is the most used blog hosting service in China, followed by Blogcn, Sina Blog and Sohu Blog. The data is absolutely different from those of Baidu.

3. In a research by Analysys International, the number of China’s bloggers has reached 33.36 million by the end of Q3 2005, more than twice compared with 14.75 million by the end of 2004. And the number is expected to grew to 40 million by the end of 2005. Analysys estimates that number of blogger will amount to 99 million by 2008 with compound average growth rate of 65%.

According to a press release by Analysys International in Nov 2005, Q-zone led China’s blogging market, followed by Netease, Blogcn, Bokee, Anyp and MSN Spaces. Again, the market share data are totally different, which is really confusing. Who on earth is the leading blog hosting service provider in China?

[...] There was a report on BBC the other day (sorry news.bbc.com is blocked) that by the end of 2006 there will be somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 million bloggers in China. A figure that is supported by the China Web2.0 Review site in which it has research that estimates 99 million Chinese blogs by 2008. That is a lot of sites that the Chinese filter will have to monitor. I’m sure Wesley and Tim won’t be the only casualties of this information war. [...]

  3. How Do You Know If Your Blog is Banned or Blocked? : The Blog Herald on June 10th, 2008 2:43 am

[...] If you have friends, family, co-workers, or potential readers in China, the odds are that your blog is blocked, though it might not be. China is notorious for blocking tons of blogs, news, and informational sites with the Great Firewall of China, including blocking access to Technorati and Wikipedia. According to the China Web2.0 Review, estimates are that by the end of 2008, there will be 99 million blogs in Chinese, most of them based in China, which could put pressure on the government to open up the Great Firewall of China, though hopes are dim.
