Yodao: New Search Service from Netease
Yodao is a new search service developed by Netease, a popular portal site in China, in stealth mode for more than a year. (via xucx) Netease started to use Google’s search service in its website since 2004, and Netease also cooperates with Google to place Google Adsense in Netease’s 163.com.
Currently Yodao provides three kinds of service: web search, blog search and dictionary. Yodao has input suggest function which most of Chinese search engines have not provide yet. According to my priliminary test, the web search results of Yodao is not bad. It also has a nice preview feature, for a webpage result, you move mouse point over preview button, you can read the text of result page in the new preview layer. (see screenshot below)

However, the most impressing feature of Yodao is its blog search service. It has great potential to be the best blog search service in China. Yodao allows users to search for blog posts or blogs, results for blog posts can also be sorted by relevancy (default) or by date, like most of its competitors. You can only choose the timeframe to filter the results only within the specific timeframe. I tried to search “Asian Games”, the same keyword for testing Baidu blogsearch, in Yodao, it returns 8,286 results with the latest posts within 3 hours. The time lag for indexing is much better than Baidu blogsearch, and similar to Qikoo. Sometimes when I switch between sort by relevancy and by date, the number of results changed, I think it should be a bug.
Yodao generates result page (for example, Keso’s blog result page) for each blog to show some statistics, including number of inbound links, frequency of posts, average length of posts, hourly post frequency and etc, most of these features are lacking in all other Chinese blogsearch service. The count of inbound links is one of the most important factors to evaluate the influence of a specific blog, but neither Baidu blogsearch and Qikoo blogsearch provides link search so far.
Netease’s Yodao also respresents China’s portal sites’ attempts to explore the search market. Both Sina and Sohu have launched their search business one year ago, Netease started to test its Yodao. QQ, who use Google’s servide for its Soso.com, is developing its own search service for quite a long time.
