Baidu’s Blogosphere Data Questioned By Blogger(Updated)

Baidu released some basic statistics of China’s blogoshpere yesterday, but soon, its data were questioned by some Chinese bloggers.

Since Mblogger.cn, CSDN Blog and CNblogs, three of top ten BSPs by Baidu, are all powered by .text blog system, and .text will show the number of users and blog posts by default. Tinyfool doublechecked the statistics of these three BSPs, and think statistics by Baidu is not a good reference to trust.

So if we rank by number of users, it should be CSDN Blog, Mblogger.cn and CNblogs. But according to Baidu, the rank is Mblogger.cn, CNblogs and CSDN Blog. So what is the problem? Is it because Baidu’s indexed pages favored CNblogs and Mblogger.cn than CSDN blog or because Baidu made mistake when filtering indexed pages and making statistics? Or maybe Baidu’s rank has considered more factors other than number of users and blogs, so what are those factors.

Update: OKRSS, a China’s RSS search engine, released another statistics several days before Baidu did. They explained how they deal with every major hosting service to gather the data and questioned Baidu’s statistics as well. According to OKRSS’s data, the number of user of MSN Spaces is about 800,000, so for 16 million users, there should be at least 20 hosting service with the similar user base as MSN Spaces, OKRSS think it impossible.

[…] A recent (and controversial) study by Baidu, a leading Chinese search engine, claims that there are 37 million blogs in China, maintained by 16 million bloggers. MSN Spaces is one of 658 blog hosting companies in China, and of the top ten companies cited in the Baidu study, at most 4 are well indexed by Technorati. (MSN is very well indexed, and Blogbus appears to be well indexed. MBlogger.cn turns up some posts, though a large number of errors, and cnblogs.com turns up a small number of posts.) […]
