Plant8: A New Podcasting Site

Plant8When most of the podcasting sites are hosting video files in China, Plant8, a newly-launched website, still focuses on audio podcasting, and only support audio file formats.

Plant8, officially launched just a month ago, was selected as one of the best Web 2.0 companies in South China by New Express, a popular newspaper in Guangzhou. In fact, the idea of Plant8 has nothing new. And after I tried Plant8, I found even its features have nothing new. Plant8 provides storage for users to upload audio files, and allows users to create a radio channel. Users can comment and digg audio clips.

However, maybe we even can not regard it as a podcasting site, since it does not provide rss feeds. No feed, but email subscription. It does not support tag either. It is somewhat strange for a so-called web 2.0 social media website.

There are more than 150 video sharing sites in China already, Plant8 would like to differentiate itself by focusing on audio sharing. But I don’t think Plant8 does it right. The development of audio podcasting in China is not very well due to various reasons including users’ awareness and acceptance. On the other hand, users will not use Plant8 just because it specializes in hosting audio files, if it does not have any innovative features, and even offers less features than most of its competitors. To be honest, I have no idea why it would be a winner among web 2.0 companies in South China.
