Sina To Monetize Blog Service Directly
As we said before, blogging service is becoming more and more important to China’s portal sites. Now, Sina starts to plan to monetize this heavy traffic directly in second quarter of 2007.
Sina’s blogging and video services have experienced phenomenal growth in 2006. According to Sina’s latest 2006 Q4 earning call, Sina’s blogging service attracted 120 million daily page views and 3.7 million daily visitors in the last week of January, that is more than 100% increase when compared with nine months ago.
Just one month after Sina officially launched its video sharing service, Sina’s video service has reached 15,000 daily video uploads and about 5 million daily clip views, that makes Sina one of the most popular video sharing platform in China. Our rough test on Baidu’s video search also proved the popularity of Sina video service.
Charles Chao, CEO of Sina, said in the earning call
I mentioned in the previous conference calls that we already have started to monetize the blog indirectly through a lot of interactive marketing campaigns, and our current plan is to try to monetize some of these directly, probably starting in Q2 of this year….There are a lot of plans, but we have to experiment whether they will be working effectively in this market.
So, we can wait to see what’s Sina’s plan, besides direct advertising on blogs. In the mean time, in the fourth quarter of 2006, page views of Sohu Blogs increased 70% sequentially and registered blog users increased about 50% sequentially. But Sohu did not mention its monetization plan on blog in its earning call.
