Baidu Cooperate with Autonomy in Video Search, to launch Book Search after Spring Festival

Baidu AutonomyBaidu Video Search, launched several days ago, turned out to be using technology from UK based Autonomy, Donews is reporting. Interestingly, the day Baidu launched its Video Search, some media reported that Baidu’s video search is text based, which means it can only deal with title of the video clip. Then the report mentioned OpenV, a video startup in Beijing, whose technology is content-based.

In fact, OpenV is also based on Autonomy’s technology, Virage, which is a frame analysis technology, so that you can search inside video content. Autonomy is also the technology provider of Blinkx, who has just announced content relevant video widgets. In 2005, Autonomy has established Blinkx China, named Cblinkx.tv. For some unknown reason, Cblinkx.tv has turned into today’s OpenV.

In today’s Donews report, it guesses two possible approaches of the deal between Baidu and Autonomy. One is to license technology from OpenV. This is very like Baidu licensed technology to other news portals in early days. The other way is Baidu invents into OpenV. The report said the second approach is more possible.

Donews also reported that Baidu is to launch book search after Chinese Spring Festival. If this is possible, we don’t think the product will be like Google Book Search, which provides full viewable content, instead it will be like other vertical search engines to be an aggregator of online book stores.
