Match.com Acquires Chinese Dating Site Edodo
According to this AP report, Match.com has acquired Beijing based dating site Edodo. Financial details is not disclosed. Match.com is owned by IAC, which is also the parent company of Ask.com.
Edodo launched in around 2005. The AP report shows it has 180,000 paid users. Before this deal, it’s almost never reported by Chinese media. Take a look at its Alexa data, you will find it’s a bit weird, 41.5% of its traffic is from US, only 16.3% is from China. Edodo seems to be a child company of Elong, a leading travel service.
Match.com has quietly launched its Chinese site. Its service is quite simple: After users set up their profile, they will start to receive match results according to their search criteria. Besides traditional message like email, users can also send winks to each other to express interest.
Edodo’s service is basically identical to Match.com. It also provides photos sharing and blogging service. Like Match.com, Edodo provides both free and paid service. Its free service has some limitations.
Based on all currently available information, this deal is quite a match. Online dating service is an important part of social networking. Although there’s no official statistics, dating sites in China is probably no less than video sharing sites.
