Netease Launches Wiki-style Entertainment Database

Netease Ent WikiBased on idea of wiki, Netease, aka 163, launched an entertainment database service recently. The service, which is like a wiki version IMDB, allows users to create and edit entertainment-related items, such as movies, dramas, music albums and entertainment stars. It is no doubt that Netease intends to build a complete database by taking advantage of power of user collaboration.

It is not the first time that Netease embraced wiki in its product, Netease launched a sports wiki product several months ago. Comparing with its entertainment database, sports wiki is more open, users are allowed to add or edit any kind of information, while entertainment database is more structured, users can only edit items based on its pre-defined data structure.

Among big Chinese internet companies, Netease is the most aggressive one to apply wiki idea in its products. Besides Netease, Baidu has a wiki-style encyclopedia product named Baidu Baike. Sina partnered with Netor on a Chinese name wiki program two years ago, but now it is almost impossible to find the link to this program in Sina’s website, and since then, Sina did not have any new product on wiki. On the other hand, some vertical websites started to develop wiki product, such as Hexun’s finance wiki, and eLong’s tourism guide wiki.

I have seen some rapid growth this past year in the number English-language Web of various specific wikis (here’s great list - http://eastwikkers.typepad.com/eastwikkers_/33_wikis/index.html)

It seems that there needs to be a certain threshold of activity to make them useful and some stewardship (the “nice’ word for control).

Do you see the Netease wikis achieving that level of activity that makes them useful and robust?
