Netease Partner With 56.com to Provide Video Service
Following Sina, another popular portal website in China, Netease, started to provide video sharing service two weeks ago.
Being a video sharing site, 163 allows users to upload video files up to 60M per file, but the video uploading feature is provided by its partner 56.com, another video sharing site. The uploaded videos are hosted in 56.com and show 56.com’s logo.
Besides uploading, users can also recommend favorite videos on other video sharing sites, such as Youtube, Tudou, Youku. By providing URL links of your favorite videos, you can add them into your recommendation list in 163 Video. As a new comer in this hot market, I think it is smart for Netease to take aggregation strategy, it will help 163 to enlarge its content pool to attract more users. But it would be better if 163 can provide more convenient tools for users to aggregate videos as various niche video channels, similar to Magnify.net.
While two of three major portal website in China have their own video service, the question is when Sohu will launch similar service. Interestingly, two ex-Sohu executives both run their video sharing startups, i.e. Victor Koo’s Youku and Kevin Li’s Ku6, which recently got several million USD funding.
