Waiting To The End: Myspace.cn Launches
When most of Chinese people were still in dreams, Myspace.cn quietly launched today in the early morning.
The service is well integrated with its US version. When you signup in its Chinese version, your account works in the US version too. That means every new user to Myspace.cn will add one number to Myspace.com. And their two profiles are synchronized.
Myspace.cn is not only a localized language interface. It keeps the style of the website, but it had some modifications with the channels. The school channel is only available in China. I think it makes sense, because there is not an outstanding leader like Facebook in China at this point. It may still have a chance. Some channels like Comedy, Video and Film are not available in Chinese version.
You may wonder if they meet the competition from 51.com and other portal service like Sina, QQ and Netease. For one thing, lots of existing users don’t have the patience to maintain their profile for life long time. They tend to try every new services and leave lots of abandoned profiles. The other bigger point is from Luo Chuan, CEO of Myspace.cn, in answering an interview from China CBN. He said the target of Myspace.cn is the majority in silence. You must know 1:99 theory of user generated content service. Their target is the 99 part. “They are like submarines watching around. When they found an ideal community, they will float up and participate.” said Luo Chuan. I tend to agree with that. It’s never too late to launch such a service in China.
Bill Bishop has a good compilation of background of Myspace.cn, so I don’t bother to duplicate them again.
Update: This is the widely cited report from New York Times.

[...] MySpace.cn, el MySpace chino (China Web2 Review) [...]
I find the MySpace.cn to be a true disappointment. Is it for China or is it for Chinese in the west? The lack of popularity since its launch proves everyone’s disappointment in it. How can MySpace.cn compete with such local sites as 51.com, Baidue Space, or Taobao or even new local sites like 360Quan which is grappling onto the web 2.0 market. 56.com or even the giant QQ, how can MySpace have a chance?
Been trying to get some traffic results for MySpace.cn, and from what I did find its not to good for MySpace.cn, poor traffic results and the traffic they do seems more international than anything. But alot of sites in China are falling in the ranks with Web 2.0 trend..UUME, 56.com, youku.com, but then again there are some new succesful ones, Tudou is doing amazing, also a new heavy hitter 360Quan.com is entering frighteningly fast, but Taobao , Baidu Space is king..goodbye MySpace.cn go back home !
