Wenwen.com: Tencent’s Ask & Answer Service

WenwenTencent, who operate the most popular IM service, QQ, in China, launched its ask & answer service under its search brand, Soso.com, and use another domain wenwen.com as well.

The first ask & answer community launched in China seemed to be Sina’s iAsk, before Sina rolled out its own search engine under the name of iAsk, the name “iAsk” is solely for Sina’s ask & answer service. But right now, the most popular ask & answer service in China is Baidu Zhidao, over 15 million questions have been answered in Baidu Zhidao since it launched about two years ago. Besides Baidu and Sina, Yahoo China also runs a similar service, i.e. the localized version of Yahoo Answer.

It is obvious that Tencent’s Wenwen copied a lot from Baidu, from UI to user incentive plan. It intends to capitalize on QQ’s extensive user base and its popular QQ IM client to compete with Baidu Zhidao. I think the ask & answer community is consistent with Tencent’s typical user profile, and it will be a potential challenger to Baidu Zhidao, rather than another Paipai of Tencent.

Previously Tencent’s Paipai.com planed to build a C2C website to compete with Taobao.com on basis of its user base, however, it seems Paipai.com is not as successful as Tencent imagined.
