Preparing For Kuro, The Chinese iTunes
Last month we reported Taiwan ezPeer+ was entering Chinese digital music market. Turns out that it’s only a tip of the iceberg. A news conference in Beijing yesterday announced that IGRS, C-media and 22 music labels including the Big 4 are working together on digital music downloads.
The core protection technology is DMCP of IGRS, a self-developed DRM technology. It will be embedded in audio chips from C-Media as well as other devices and nodes in the business chain. The first music downloads website enabled with IGRS technology, Kuro.cn has launched.
Next month, the first round of MP3s with IGRS technology will hit the market, a Beijing Morning Post report has more details. Guangzhou-based Unibit will be the MP3 manufacturer. The price of the MP3 will be RMB 299 or RMB 399, including 300 pre-loaded songs which can be listened for free in one year. After that, the monthly fee is about RMB 15 for 250 songs.
Computerworld Singapore has another big news about a music phone also called Kuro. This will be an initiative of a Taiwanese joint venture called iPeer. Members of the JV include C-Media, Realtek Semiconductor and ezPeer+. There’s also a Taiwan music downloads website Kuro.com.tw, which is operated by Kuroom and ezPeer+. Though it’s unclear now if it has anything to do with Kuro.cn.
Update: Billboard has the story too.
