Taobao, the leader in Chinese C2C market, released a report on shopping at Taobao in the first half of 2007. Since Taobao has gained about 72% market share in first quarter of 2007, according to iResearch, Taobao’s report would help us to know the general picture of Chinese online shopping market.

According to the report, the C2C online shopping market in China has been gaining great momentum over the past six months. The report shows a lot of data to back up their claim. The transaction volume of Taobao for the past six months is RMB 15.7 billion, which has increased by nearly 200% comparing to the same period of 2006. Taobao has 39.9 million registered users by the end of June 2007, increasing over 80% comparing to the same period of last year.

Another stat that can show how fast online C2C Market is growing is the number of merchandise and sellers on Taobao. The report says there are about 75 million merchandise online at Taobao every day increasing by 100% over the same period of last year. Among them house ware is the fastest growing categories taking up about 20% of all the transaction volume. Many companies started to take Taobao as a new channels, in first half of 2007, nearly 2000 companies were approved to open online branded stores in Taobao, including P&G an Moto.

Taobao’s report concludes that the C2C online shopping is becoming the major shopping method in China. But I feel like it is still a little too early to say that. Even though the online shopping market is growing fast, it is just only 1% of the whole shopping volume in China.
