Alimama: The Ad Exchanges Service From Alibaba

AlimamaWhen Google, Yahoo and Microsoft acquired several ad exchanges in this year, Kaiser Kuo asked a question, “Will this happen in China, why there is no ad exchanges in China?”, people try to answer this question by various reasons. But now, Alibaba just launched an online ad exchanges called Alimama to serve this market.(via Fenng)

As a typical ad exchanges, in Alimama, publishers can specify the format of ads on their websites, the types of ads they would like to serve, the price for the ads, and the profile of the website to let advertisers to choose. Advertisers can set the readers they want to targeted, their budgets and the type of ads. Then if there is websites match the criteria of advertisers, the ads will show automatically on those websites.

Alibaba’s B2B service already has many users of small and medium enterprises, who would be main advertisers of an ad exchanges, so Alibaba can cross market this new service to those SMEs. In the mean time, there are so many website masters in China who are not satisfied with Google Adsense and eager to find a new revenue source, so it is not difficult for Alimama to find publishers too. Then the problem that Alimama has to face is whether Chinese online longtail ads market has mature enough, so that SMEs in China would like to buy ads on an ad exchanges.
