QQ Launches Resource Sharing Platform

QQ XuanwoQQ has its own download client, Cyclone. It’s not as popular as Xunlei, but they provide similar features. When you use it to download with http or ftp, it will find and download the resource from other users at the same time with its own peer-to-peer protocol. That’s why they are faster than direct downloading from the server. They support BT as well. Xunlei is even compatible with eMule.

Now QQ has taken one step further by launching QQ Xuanwo at x.qq.com. This is similar to Xunlei’s GouGou resource search engine. But it is a walled garden. You can only find resources shared by other Cyclone users.

Resources are shared through Cyclone software. User don’t have to upload anything. They just mark their resource as public, then it will be searchable from Xuanwo. Xuanwo also provides a personal profile for users, where records resources shared by them.

On landing page of any particular resource, it shows who shared it. So you are not going to share any questionable file. If the user is online, you can reach him via QQ by one click. You can also check his QQ space.

It is a trend that any popular download tools will roll out a resource sharing platform. Another competitor of Xunlei, Flashget has rolled out Kuaiche earlier this year.

QQ’s launch of the downloading client (as well as the resource sharing platform) shouldn’t have been a surprise to China’s Internet community. My colleagues have been using QQ to transfer large-volume files even if they have almost disgarded the chatting tool after they left school.

I won’t be surprised either if Baidu launches a chatting tool (which has been rumored for a long time) or a downloading client (as long as copyright issue won’t bite it any more).

These two companies, QQ and Baidu, are everywhere doing everything, threating the whole rest of the industry, with their vast user base.
