MapABC Testing My Maps

MapABCMapABC, the data provider of Google Maps Chinese version, is testing customized annotation service, called MapABC DIY.

User has three ways to annotate on the map: point, line and area. Every annotation has a title and description. User can upload photos or add links of online photos. Annotations on the map are organized into a customized map which can be shared with a direct URL.

Customized maps can be tagged. There’s a portal like page which shows hot maps and different topics.

The service is apparently way under development. It shows me map of Beijing. But I don’t find a way to change to other cities. And I failed to save my testing annotations into a customized map. I am using Firefox. Customized maps have comments. But they seem to be either spam or testing data.

The service enables users to contribute real pictures of certain places. It’s similar to City8’s annotation service. But it’s more like a complement to its street view feature. EEmap is another good customized map hosting service based on Google Maps. But it’s feature can be replaced by Google’s My Maps.
