Sina To Share Revenue With Bloggers

Sina announced yesterday that it will launch revenue sharing program with bloggers in Sina on October. Bloggers will get 50% of revenue after deduction of cost, or “gross profit”. The program is not open to all bloggers, Sina has invited about 3,000 top bloggers in Sina to join the program, but others can also apply for approval of Sina’s editors. Maybe Sina will build it into an ads exchange for advertisers and bloggers later.

But blog post is still different from content page of news channels, Sina need to deal with the ads program carefully, otherwise it may enrage the bloggers. For example, there are many celebrity bloggers in Sina, I’m sure they won’t expect to see any adversing from their competing companies appearing on their blogs.

The move will strengthen the position of Sina in blogging service market, and it has the potential to change the landscape of this market. As Bill Bishop said, “Sina already has the lead in attracting celebrity bloggers, and this move may pressure other sites to match the revenue share in order to keep their most popular contributors, at a time when they are already losing money and can ill afford to give up a large chunk of their revenue.”

According to Alexa data, the blogging service of Sina accounted for 15% of the overall traffic of Sina, ranks No. 1 in all Sina’s service and content channels. To successfully monetize the heavy traffic of blog will increase the ads revenue of Sina.
