Timeku: Yet Another Timeline Hosting Based On SIMILE
Back in July, we introduced Xtimeline, an ajax widget for time based event. It’s a product for global market. Not much Chinese content has been created yet, although the company has rolled out a Chinese version after we profiled it.
Now there’s more timeline fun brought by Timeku. Unlike Xtimeline, which builds its own widget, Timeku is based on SIMILE|timeline, an opensource project of MIT. In its current stage, Timeku is probably just a parttime project, although it can be a startup killer or becomes a startup itself in the future.
Besides those standard features like browsing, creating, sharing, which are absolutely similar to Xtimeline, it supports customizing style of the widget. If you just view the widget on the website, customized style may not be so necessary. But think of embedding the widget to other places like your own blog, you will know it’s important, because you would like to keep your site in consistent style.
Speaking of embedding to other sites, Timeku’s widget is smaller and looks better, maybe it should thank MIT’s code. I have never met a website or blog which includes an Xtimeline widget, because it needs at least 900px to make an Xtimeline widget looks nice. For widget service, or Youtube of any format, if it’s not picked up by bloggers to embed into posts, it doesn’t exist.
While internationalizing a site is not so difficult, internationalization of the user generated content is difficult. We have been seeing Xtimeline rolling out bunch of updates including chronological event list, import and export of data. But nice design doesn’t always result into buyout.
Thanks Shizhao for the tips.
