LinJuNet: Connect Your Neighbors Using Google Maps

LinjunetLinJuNet (Linju means neighbor in Chinese) is a recently launched service focusing on create a social network by connecting your neighbors using Google Map.

Basically LinJuNet allows users to input their hometown, schools, office and places they visited on google map. Then a social network will be created by connecting the “neighbors” around those areas. Users can upload pictures, add neighbors and write comments on the social network. Yes, if Facebook and Xiaonei can use school as the source of creating social network why not using neighborhood, and in fact, there are quite a few real estate communities doing similar things in China , such as Soufun.

The unique feature of LinJuNet is the mash up of Google Maps. However, adding map mashups into a social networks sounds cool, but if you need to find your neighbors by desperately trying to locate your home in Google maps, which does not have good search feature for Chinese maps, it will not be a good experience for you. Then I’d rather change to use Soufun or other social network sites which enable me to find my neighbors easier.

Currently, LinJuNet just provide very simple social networking features, it should add more features to inspire more communication between users, because they will not be friends just because they live close, they become friends because they can find common interests during communication. This is also one of the common challenge faced by many social network sites in China.

I was curious as how they use google map, because AFAIK, google map api doesn’t work on china map, (not officially anyway, there are ways to hack it). I went to the site and took a look and found they just use gmap at highest scale (lowest resolution).

If you zoom in, it doesn’t show more detailed map. So this is not real google map application, just yet another plain social networking site.

According to some psychology theory, common interests, geography neighbourhood, and reciprocal activities are the most important three factors for people to make friends with each other.
