Baidu To Enter C2C E-Commerce Market
Just one day after Baidu denied that it will enter consumer-to-consumer e-commerce market, Baidu officially announced its strategic plan on e-commerce market tonight.
Baidu announced that it will leverage its high user traffic and large online communities to build a C2C service. It has already established a new department dedicated to the development of innovative e-commerce technologies. The service is planned to be launch in 2008.
Currently, Taobao is obviously the market leader in China’s C2C market, followed by Eachnet of Tom Online and Paipai of Tencent. According to iResearch, Taobao took over 80% market share by the end of June 2007. The transaction volume of Taobao for the first half of 2007 is RMB 15.7 billion, tripled than one year ago.
What will Baidu’s C2C service look like? Another Taobao or something like Google Product Search? I guess it will not be a direct competitor of Taobao, because Baidu will definitely take advantage of its powerful search technology rather than building a Baidu’s Taobao. On the other hand, it will be much more than a Baidu Product Search, Baidu will also leverage its popular communities services like Baidu Postbar, Baidu Zhidao and Baidu Baike to build this C2C platform.
Since most of Baidu’s services, esp. community services, are entertainment-oriented, how to change users’ mind and impression on Baidu would be a big challenge to Baidu’s C2C service.
