Interview with Feedsky Founder Lv Xinxin, Part I
Feedsky, the only Chinese web2.0 company in that widely spreaded logo map, is also a well-know startup in China. Feedsky provides similar services as Feedburner, we have profiled it on Nov 3, 2005.
Feedsky plan to roll out its new version shortly, an important milestone of Feedsky. Lv Xinxin, founder and CEO, took time from his strict calendar to accept our email interview. In the interview, we discuss the development of Feedsky, the competion with Feedburner, RSS advertising, its partners and business model. The original interview is in Chinese, we will publish it in two parts. (update: Part II of the interview is published here)
China Web2.0 Review: What did you do before Feedsky?
Lv Xinxin: I worked in a education software company as Marketing Manager, took charge of marketing and promotion, and also some sales.
CWR: How do you get the idea of Feedsky?
Lv : In fact, at first, we planned to be a BSP (blogging service provider). But after doing some market research, we found there were many BSPs. Then, we thought that RSS is critical and in the center of this ecosystem, so we decide to take this direction.
CWR: How do you think about the development of RSS market in China?
Lv: In China, RSS is till in its early-adopter stage, low penetration rate, only a small quantity of RSS-related startups, and limited investment in RSS industry. I think RSS market will develop in high growth rate, more and more companies will enter this market in coming two years.
CWR: How many staffs in Feedsky now?
Lv: 11 in total, 6 of them are technicians.
CWR: Would you please briefly introduce the development of Feedsky after its launch?
Lv: Feedsky Alpha was launched in July and beta version in Sept. In terms of website development, we made some mistakes. But now, we have an experienced website architect to join us as CTO. The coming new version will establish our new system structure, which will support the development of Feedsky for years. All the following system upgrade will based on this structure to expand its function and provider better and more stable services. In terms of marketing, we are quite satisfied with it. Now, we manage feeds for 4 major BSPs and more than 90 websites in China.
CWR: What’s the biggest problem you encountered during the development of Feedsky.
Lv: It should be technology. Feed management is a fresh area, we have to start from the scratch. Anyway, we’v made it and will establish a strong and robust system structure for future development.
CWR: What’s the main change of your coming new version?
Lv: The new version should be a milestone of us. We completely change the system structure to significantly enhance the stability and scalbility of Feedsky.
CWR: We’ve reported that your company cooperates with Blogcn, Blogbus and Joyo, is there any other partnership?
Lv: Currently, we mainly cooperate with China’s BSPs. including Blogcn, Blogbus, Anyp and Wretch.cc, a top BSP from Taiwan. Besides them, we also provide feed management service for over 90 websites. And we also partner with Linktone to explore opportunies in wireless market (Note: Linktone launched a mobile RSS reader in Dec.), with Joyo and Narrowad in RSS advertising. And more partnership is under way, we will soon announce cooperation with a well-known foreign RSS company.
CWR: If possible, can you disclose the number of feed managed by Feedsky?
Lv: As you can see from our tag page, the number of feed generated by bloggers themselves is just over 7000, that’s still a very small number. But the total feed managed by us so far are over 200,000, and still many feeds are pending to add to our system.
