Douban Ninetaps To Launch Personalized News Channel

Douban ninetaps channel oneDouban Ninetaps is testing article recommendation on its channel one. Originally it only has blog level recommendation. 100 users have been invited in the closed test.

Unlike existing channels, which shows hot articles on a specific topic, channel one only shows relevant articles to single user. It removes articles the user has read or recommended. It’s like a lazy man’s channel, where you wait for interesting articles to find you.

The new service has done a couple of things right. For example, it knows less means more, so it only gives nine articles at a time.

The quality is still not ideal yet. Since the launch of the service, I have recommended 470 articles. I have 245 blogs in my collection. This should be way above average users. But I still don’t get enough quality recommendation.

Behind every recommended article, there’s a ‘No Interest’ button. But since uses will likely to have more uninterested articles than those interested one, a button to set the whole page as no interest would be useful.

The quality of the service depends heavily on how many users with similar interest are using the service. Currently the user base is still too small to generate ideal result. And users are not trained on how to properly affect the filtering engine.

Users like me are using channel 4 as the entrance of the service. Channel specific recommendation will be likely to generate more useful result.

Our former discussion of the service is at here and here.
