Meebo’s Trademark Violated In China

Meebo Chinese CloneAny long-term reader of this blog knows we are basically kind about copying proven product from developed countries, because we understand this is an efficient way to have a standing foot in the market. While reviewing such kind of services, we friendly prevent from using the word “Clone”, and we suck deep into the product to dig out any possible innovative point.

But pretending to be official Chinese version of certain successful foreign service is intolerable. This morning we red from Wappblog about a possible acquisition of Meebo in China. Then a little googling tells us this is not the case.

The company involved is a Beijing based company, which originally has a web-based instant messenger product, called ImTata. Users can use the service to connect to Microsoft MSN Messenger and QQ, basically the same business model like Meebo, but more useful to Chinese users since there’s no QQ supporting in Meebo, and we have heard Meebo has no such plan any time soon. But several months ago, ImTata gave up its original name and domain, and has been dressing like official Chinese site of Meebo without any credit information. In fact, Meebo has a Chinese version linked on the official site.

Meebo hasn’t taken any action yet. Probably it doesn’t deserve to spend time on a violator without much traffic yet. But we feel it’s necessary to prevent similar things happen again. The Image on the left is the screen shot of the violating service. Click the image to get a full screen version.

[…] By way of China Web 2.0 Review: Meebo could be seeing a Beijing firm encroaching its trademark. Meebo.com.cn — which does not, by the way, belong to the original Meebo.com — claims (certainly by way of its simple UI ripoff) to be a Chinese Meebo (at that, most likely an illegal or at least less-than-legitimate Chinese Meebo), dressing up like a Chinese language version of Meebo without giving the original Meebo any credit. The funny thing is this: Meebo.com (the original) does, in fact, have a Chinese version of its website online! […]
