Booso: A RSS Search Engine by Bokee.com

Bokee.com(former BlogChina) officially launched a RSS search engine named Booso(博搜) in late October. Booso was developed by Dr. Liang Lu (卢亮) in 2004. Dr. Liang Lu is co-founder of a BSP Blogdriver and joined Bokee after BlogChina’s acquisition of Blogdriver in late 2004.

In Booso’s homepage, it is said Booso has already indexed over 7.6 million blog posts from more than 2.3 million blogs, and also indexed more than 110 thousand photos. And since July 1, 2005, about 40 million search request completed.

I use “super voice girl” to test the feature of Booso. Super voice girl(超级女声) is a very popular TV program in China, similar to American Idol, and invoked many bloggers’ comments and discussion in their blog. Booso’s results page is divided into three parts: in left, it is the results of blog post; in up right, results of photo search; in bottom right, the results from blog hosted in Bokee.

In search of “super voice girl”, the result is 295 blog posts, 122 photos, 231 Bokee blogs. It is really strange, when I search “super voice girl”, 445 bokee blog posts was found, but now the number is 231. All the photo search results are from photos upload by Bokee’s photo album users. For blog search results, it is really strange that the source linkages are linked to Bokee’s rss reader instead of original sources. So it may imply that Booso only index the feed content in its rss reader.

The search for “super voice girl” get more than 40 thousand results in icerocket, about 56 thousand results in Google Blogsearch, more than 2.6 million results in Technorati (but many results in Technorati are unrelated to “super voice girl”). Compared to these blog search engines, it is obvious that Booso still has a long way to go.

Booso’s search results can be ranked by time or by relevance. And keyword RSS feed for 10 results or 100 results is available to subscribe. But Booso can only search blog posts, it can not help us to find related blogs, one of the most important feature of a blog search engine.
