Anyone Remember Belinker? Peptalk Picks The Idea, Rebands To Bedo

BedoIf you don’t know about Belinker, it’s not your fault. It has entered dead pool before we can cover it. It launched in around June 2006 as a copycat of Dodgeball. The idea of Belinker or Dodgeball is that you SMS your location to the system, then it will inform your friends around the area. It’s a pretty simple way to build a mobile social network. But after Dodgeball was acquired by Google, the service hasn’t been promoted, and has lost founding team.

Peptalk, a Suzhou based mobile IM and blogging service, has just integrated location based service into its software, and decided to give the service a new name, Bedo. The idea is just the same as Belinker, but users are not reporting with SMS anymore.

There’re two ways for the system to track your location. If your mobile phone has GPS integrated, like Nokia N95 or 6110Nav, your accurate position will be reported to the system. Otherwise, it will use the data from China Mobile’s base station to track you, which is of course less accurate and delayed.

Since I have canceled GPRS package for my cell phone, I haven’t tried the service. So I don’t know how exactly the software reports my location and how easily if I want to hide myself for a while, but still have the communication features. If you are a real user, welcome to share with us your experience.

Thanks Daodao for the tips.

Also from Suzhou, http://www.bedo.cn, I visited their office about 2 months ago. And got a show of the early version of bedo. Pretty neat app. They seem to stress on location-based dating more than microblogging.
