Baidu Launches Online Security Service

Baidu SecurityYesterday, Baidu launched its new security center under the domain of an.baidu.com. Now it simply provides two services: vulnerability and virus scanner. They are both by ActiveX plugins, so users don’t have to manually download anything. But certainly they are IE friendly only.

Formerly, Baidu has an anti-virus channel, which is a product promotion area for local security companies, now linked at the upper right corner. The new online service could be one step further for promotion of those security product, but it also removes some needs to buy an offline product. The thing for sure is that those security companies are less likely to roll out their own online services in the future.

Similar services include Qihoo 360safe and Yahoo Assistant. But those two products both require offline installation. Although they have richer features, users with any computer knowledge tend to install as less as possible software on their system. To this point, Baidu has got the upper hand.

Baidu security center is powered by Kingsoft.

[...] Baidu has such broad marketshare in China, there are opinions that the computer security industry (selling anti-virus software) would be significantly negatively impacted by this service if Baidu’s service is free. Clearly a free service that would be browser-based (vs. something that is either not free or requires a download) is the easiest option for users, but it’s not clear that such a solution would provide the best security.  If this service becomes popular and computer security vendors lose the retail market for security software, it’s not clear that users will be any safer and if the plugin was not designed properly, they may be much worse off.
